No. We do it in the office. But we also run the same SSID across our entire
network.

Are you having your techs do this when they install?

You only have to do it once. Not any harder than logging into the subscriber

Isn't that a massive pain to block list them in the first place?

What we do in this situation is setup an MAC ACL deny list on the AP. We back
our AP’s up nightly, so in the event we have to replace an AP, we just pull the
latest config, flash the new radio and go install. This works well for us and
we do not have any real issues with this. On your situation, you could do the
same and force a split between your AP’s.

We’ve done same SSID everywhere for some time, but need to have a combination
of ACL on the APs, and / or WPA-EAP that would only auth on the correct AP,
along with scripts to enforce everything. We’re now moving to unique SSIDs on
each AP after weighing the pros and cons. As far as same SSID on every AP:

Pros:

1. Generic config works everywhere. Our backend systems can lock them to
an AP, or leave them unlocked as needed. We initially leave them unlocked
until installed then lock them.
2. If an AP dies, easy to unlock and let them roam to another AP.
3. Once an AP comes back, we can re-lock them and scripts will kick them
from the “incorrect” AP.

Cons:

1. Initial association times can get long as they try multiple APs before
finding the “correct” AP. With AC and GPS/Fixed Frame, the association time
grew immensely – like 15 minutes or more in some cases.
2. Someone kindly pointed out that WPA-EAP is not designed to be a “door,”
but rather a “lock and key.”

Our install procedures have changed so we’re always getting into the web
interface and choosing the best SSID now. Overall, the transition has been
smooth, and the very fast association times are saving the installers and
support technicians lots of time waiting for radios to associate. It’s not as
convenient in an outage, but we’ll try to avoid those however we can.

I had an AP with a bit too many people on it and we put up a second AP to
overlap the coverage. The customers all rebooted and they've been
appropriately connected to the correct AP for the last few days.

Has anyone ever changed the SSIDs to make sure they're locked to the right AP?
(I'm not willing to do lock to MAC). Or have you just left multiple APs with
the same SSID and things turned out all right?
