Careful, I believe -f is flood. I.e. flood the link with ICMP packets, possibly not what you want.
Typical GNU-style ping has the -M flag, e.g. ping -M want or ping -M dont . -M hint Select Path MTU Discovery strategy. hint may be either do (prohibit fragmentation, even local one), want (do PMTU discov- ery, fragment locally when packet size is large), or dont (do not set DF flag).
