I would agree that at some point we will need to be getting behind a screen
reader and sticking with it. The idea of scripting Ubuntu programs for our
users is right around the corner. Soon non-developers can help make ALL of
ubuntu more accessible. How can you make the judgement that we have to get
behind Orca when you have not
I really think we should at least investigate the LSR. I have not compared
it to orca, as I built both many months ago. Choosing a screen reader and
sticking with it should not be a simple matter of what comes first. We
should examine what the pros and cons of each product are, how much the
companies are putting into the products, what the expected life cycle of the
products are, etc. If no one in the community is willing to take on this
task I can, but I am not a screen reader user. I would much rather see a
screen reader user take on this task and indicate the limitations of LSR,
Orca, etc.
There is no need to rush our support of a specific screen reader, as far as
I know. Edgy is quite a long ways away...

I'll preface my comments my stating that I haven't ever used LSR. My
understanding is that it was shown at CSUN, and I have no idea how far it's
come since then. I have however been working with Orca for a number of
months, and I am very pleased with the amount of progress we have seen in
such a relatively short time. Orca is already working quite nicely with a
lot of popular desktop applications, such as Evolution, Gaim, and the
development versions of open and star office, just to name a few. It now
offers magnification support, and an intuitive config UI was recently added
as well.
My point is that yes, if time and effort were expended by community members
on LSR, it could potentially challenge Orca, but I believe the best
approach would be for the community as a whole to get behind a single
screen reader, and especially in light of today's announcement by the
Gnopernicus team, see:

I see no reason why that screen reader shouldn't be Orca.
