Hi Mike: Currently, in order to use the synaptic package manager and the update manager, one needs to login as root and run Orca from there. There's an outstanding bug on this that we hope to see get resolved for GNOME 2.17. The bug we've put in Orca to track this (the work is being done elsewhere) is:
