How did you update speech-dispatcher? I am currently not in karmic, but can go
back some time this week to have a look to see whether I can reproduce your
problem.

The speech-dispatcher on karmic is built with session integration features, and
is spawned either via orca or libspeechd with a shell script,
speechd-server-spawn, which determines whether you are running as root, and
takes appropriate action.

If you could give me some information as to how you updated etc, that would be
very helpful to try and work out what is going on.

Thanks.
