Hi, Eleanor. If you are going to install the newest version of Ubuntu on these machines, you get a pretty decent setup if you enable an "accessible" install. You press space at the first screen to get to a text menu, F5 to open accessibility options, and 3 to select the Orca screen reader. It actually does a bunch of other stuff, too, and makes the machine boot talking. Default accessiblity in Ubuntu Lucid is actually pretty good. I'll also put in a plug for Vinux 3.0, which is basically Ubuntu Lucid with some tweaks to make it work a bit better with Orca, and with a console screen reader.
