I seem to have misplaced the most recent email in which this question has been asked, so, will post to these lists. The commands below should get the Mozilla apps talking in Ubuntu-mate and Debian installations without Gnome (e. g. Mate). If you're using a 32-bit system, change as appropriate.

As root:
mkdir /usr/lib/gtk-2.0
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/ /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/
