My solution to that is to buy a hard drive (small by todays standards) and pop that in. I give them the old one: "Keep it carefully; it will only take me five minutes to put it back and you'll be back to exactly where you are now". After a respectable wait, I can put the old hard drive back as extra storage, and re-format it! The other thing is that it makes moving their documents easy - I temporarily hook the old drive in, and simply copy the stuff they need. I know they are not going to want Windows again: they don't, so I don't blame them for their caution. Yes, the stuff about Microsoft is pretty damning.
