There are a fair amount of tutorials you can access for free at Adobe's website. I don't know if any will apply to duck facial anatomy, but you might be able to pick up a few tips there. I agree with Nick. Do your best to achieve your vision, and give it to the world to do with what they want. (within reason). Again, I think wallpapers are a good medium for presenting different art bits that wouldn't really be useful to the end user as a proof of concept graphic. Matthew, as far as your image goes, I would suggest trying to simplify as much as possible. A few basic shapes for the head and bill, and some creative gradients to give the impression of depth. My favorite drake BTW is probably the mallard with the really rich, dark green head and white ring around his neck.
