I pitched in on the bug report as well, I agree with you and tried to make clear what my personal gripes with the new splash are. The fact that it is a change so close to the release is not a big problem, the fact that it feels like a step backwards is. When I read your e-mail to the list I expected it to be about a working implementation of some of the suggestions on ubuntu-devel, where there where some good mockups on how to actually improve on the current design. I don't know yet where the "new" splash comes from, but it obviously wasn't inspired by the discussion on ubuntu-devel. At least thanks for the fast spotting by you and the bug reporter, I'm pretty sure I'd otherwise had opened a bug report on it myself. For now, I think a solution would indeed be to revert to the previous design and then try to improve on that one following the discussion on ubuntu-devel. I would be thoroughly ashamed to be found near the new splash screen, I'm sorry to say.
