Troy's post on compiling Inkscape made me think about an article I saw a while back on "how to make icons that look good on OS X". It was basically a guide to creating something in the "gel" style that Aqua uses.

Once we are through the early stages and are converging on a particular style it might be nice to draw up a similar HOWTO. It could specify things like standard radii for blurring operations, or standard procedures to get specific effects in inkscape, gimp, photoshop and illustrator. This would mean that multiple collaborators could produce a variety of things all of which feel more consistent.
