I'm sorry for repeating this but before you guys start, look at this ..
What makes distro's like suse or fedora look so good is its polishing :)
Use the same basic image for a grub image, usplash, gdm, gsplash, wallpaper, some app splashes ( OOo, xara, gimp, .. ). Not exaclty, but base it on the same colors/logo's.
For the gtk/metacity, just use contrasted colors.
Meaning, if the GDM is glossy, the icons should be too..
