If an email thread gets more than about 10 emails there's a very good chance a new thread should be started.
When you hit reply, change the subject line. You dont' have to delete the quoted text (though you should trim it) or start from scratch. (Of course, if you're starting a completely new topic unrelated to what has been discussed you should start a new email, not reply) Doing so makes it easier for people to participate in the discussion. Some people just don't have time to read these super long email threads that have a generic subject line.
