I think a complete overhaul of gedit is required. Google chrome like theme will look nice. The tabs above and fewer, menu options will look nice. Also you can add those recent files in the thumbnails just like in chrome. And one more kind request please do not use the orange looks. Try some other colour like green or blue or a combination of contrasting colours. Too much of orange is irritating.
