Hi Everyone, I contacted this list a few months ago looking for someone to interview for my book on icons. Thank-you for the help. I thought I would let you know that I've finally finished writing (270+ pages!) and my book is now available from Rockable Press<https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?ii=1012077&c=ib&aff=189780&cl=12635>:)
It all began when I wrote a history of icon design and left out much of the free and open-source projects which I didn't know much about at the time. After reading many requests to make an updated version, I decided to include a comprehensive history of desktop icons as the basis of my book. I also interviewed Jakub Steiner about the Tango Desktop Project, and included information on KDE, GNOME and Ubuntu and discussed the rendering style of the icons and the evolution of the styles (including some history). The book takes a common sense approach to teaching the theory and techniques of icon design and doesn't lean too heavily on particular software or methods (my thought is, you can draw with whatever you like, as long as it looks good) but it is packed with helpful tips and tricks for taming stray pixels and working with multiple sizes and formats and lessons about drawing in perspective and applying light and different styles (desktop, toolbar, etc.) Anyway, if you're interested I hope you check it out<https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?ii=1012077&c=ib&aff=189780&cl=12635>and enjoy it and thank-you for the helpful connections and advice when I first started :) *Kate McInnes* Associate Editor, Vectortuts+ Tuts+ Marketplace, Lead Reviewer Author - Rockstar Icon Designer
