Hi,

I work in a computer shop and Asus boards have poor reliability - i'm forever sending them off on warranty. No offence to anyone that owns one.. Buying a DELL, HP also has it's limitations like PSU and RAM being proprietary. Personally I would recommend:

Gigabyte P35-DS3L $125 ((Realtek sound and network / No problems on linux)
Gigabyte nVidia Geforce 8500 GT 256 MB $101
INTEL CORE2DUO E8200 2.66Ghz/1333 $253 (To be released on January 20th .45NM technology)

Or on a budget?

Gigabyte M56S-S3 $100
Gigabyte nVidia Geforce 8500 GT 256 MB $101
AMD Athlon X2 4000 2.0Ghz $93

Wack this with high quality RAM and HD:

Kingston DDR2 PC6400 800Mhz 2 GB Kit $62
Seagate SATA II 320 GB Hard Disk $120

And you have a fast system that is reliable. All parts are 2 year warranty except for Seagate HD which has a 5 year warranty.

Thanks. I don't want to go down the line of HP, Dell etc. I was
    looking
for something that I could order online that is complete minus the
operating system or if it cheap enough just override what it comes
with.
Failing that I would like to compile a list of hardware parts that I
would have someone build for me.

With all the talented resources available from your fellow list members why don't you consider assembling it yourself.

This mobo has been brought to my attention and for under $100 is seems
to have a lot of features, has anyone had experience with it? I was
wondering if the NVIDIA Gb LAN controller would be a issue.

On board LAN was an issue for me when I assembled my system - it did not work in Ubuntu. Easily rectified by installing an ethernet card.

Also note that sound reproduction has often been an issue in the relationship of Ubuntu with on board sound chips. Please consider a separate sound card.

Which graphics card have you chosen or is that not an issue?
