I work in a Physics Department at a University and I helped one of the Grad students modify his Eee PC so we could install mathematica (the default partition scheme is less than helpful). As a comparison of speed, our 2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium Desktop took 3 times longer to calculate a series of 5 complicated integrals as the EeePC. So the thing certainly doesn't lack speed.
