Hi Gordon, Hi Winton, When I was setting up my toshiba satellite I came across this http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Toshiba_Satellite_P100#Linux_Support gentoo articel. there it says the optical drive needs some kernel command parameter (in this case: combined_mode=libata) to work properly. Not sure if this is the exact proplem you have, but it could have something to do with the combined CD/DVD drive notebooks nowadays have buit in.
