I am using eeeXubuntu, and find that it runs pretty well on the ol' eee You should uninstall everything you arent using, or start using the SD slot as a primary storage area. I got rid of the included office apps to put on OOo and set up a LAMP workspace. I use Bluefish for editing my code. I have previously used gcpp as my compiler [before I bricked it the first time]
I have heard stories about Ubuntu running better than Xubuntu, but I have found the inverse is true.
