If you use the standard ubuntu install it already includes openoffice for office tasks, along with evince for pdf reading Evolution is there for mail/calendar and there is pretty much everything else you need on an average day already installed. If you want to add anything more you can use the 'add/remove software' menu item to automatically download and install whatever you want
