Camorama is a comparatively primitive application and has seen very little, if any, development for quite some time. The currently favoured webcam application is Cheese.
Cheese, when it works is very good - unfortunately it does not work properly all the time. A newer version than the one in synaptic for Hardy has been released but requires a host of updated support files. A tarball would be great. My webcam (Logitech 9000) does not work with camorama and gives the same error message as the one that you get but it works with Cheese and with Skype.
