To my knowledge, pxlmono does NOT use PostScript, and i'm surprised that it performs poorly. However, it obviously was causing problems in your case. It appears that something changed between intrepid (8.10) and jaunty (9.04):

So it seems that hpijs is a better bet for now. It would probably be a
good idea to add your vote to that launchpad bug.
