I must admit that when i suggested this, the solution i had in mind was
not putting the terminal in raw mode, but rather a GUI app.  For this
particular problem, Python would be a better choice than Java, given the
bugs Matt pointed out.  (And i say this as an avowed Python-hater. ;-) )
