Hi Peter,

there are different ways to cover a flaw.

A. With the clone tool
1. In the toolbox you choose the appropriate size of your brush.
2. Choose the clone tool from the tool box.
3. go to picture and choose clone source by pointing there and press
CTRL and "click". The area will be marked with a small cross. The source
doesn't have to be near to the area you are trying to cover.
4. Go to the place you want to cover press "left mouse button" and start
to make your stroke. By releasing the mouse button the and pressing
again you will start from the setted clone source again.

B. with brush and colour selection (pixel to pixel)
1. choose your brush size
2. point with the mouse somewhere in the picture
3. press "o" or choose the colour picker tool from the tool box
4. go the colour you like to use and press "left mouse click"
5. press "p" or choose the paintbrush tool from the toolbox
6. by pressing "left mouse button" again yo apply the previous selected
colour to the image.

The paintbrush tool allows you to adjust the size of brush, the dynamics
of the brush, and opacity of the colour. Best you play a little bit
around with the tools before you start. Make always a copy of your
image, so that the original is still there, if something goes wrong.

Sorry to be not more detailed, but there are many more possibilities to
handle flaws. Sometimes they can be even from interest to keep them and
just manipulate a bit around.
But for the beginning it should be fine.

Have fun
Ferdinand

I have a photo which I wish to edit so that flaws can be painted over
with the same colour as the surrounding area. Is this possible using
GIMP, i.e. can I select the colour of the surrounding area from the
photo and use this as the colour in a brush to cover the flaw?

Regards
