Ok so a quick round up of the progress of the website update. It's now currently in a workable state with just a few little bugs to iron out.
The main thing we as the team had earmarked as important parts of the upgrade was the theme update. This is completed and I must say, looking good. As one of the website admins one of the things I had really hoped for as a part of the upgrade as a move to use Launchpad's OpenID integrated with Ubuntu's Single Sign On service. For those of you not sure what OpenID is, it's the same system used to log into Launchpad, the Ubuntu Forums, the Ubuntu Wiki, the loco.ubuntu.com site and numerous other Ubuntu sites. This means the one login details work for all sites so no need to have different accounts spread all over the web. It also alows simple, click through logins via the Ubuntu Single Sign On service. The main reason for this is I personal dislike having to remember logins for all the different sites I visit but also, the user list on the ubuntu.org.au website was become more of a spam list than a user list. The Canonical staff have been generous with their time and they've been able to get this working as well. There only one small problem, if the email used as a part of the OpenID system already exists in the user database (because it's been used to create an account) it causes a collision and error. The proposal to fix the OpenID login issue will require existing users to log in and add the launchpad openid to their account, instructions will be given on exact steps if it goes ahead this way. I am proposing we accept OpenID as the only login method for the site (after a grace period for existing users to add openids to their accoutns) to vastly simplify user management on the website. I'm also proposing we delete all user accounts that don't have open id logins associated with them after a month or so of migration time. There are literally thousands of spam accounts on the database currently that need a clean up and this seems like as good a time as any to get out the broom. So now the requirements are fulfilled is there anything else we need to think about requesting to make the website work how we need it. Obviously we'll need the planet back, but now we also have forums, social media accounts, loco.u.c site for events and meetings and the wiki site for collaboration I can't think of anything else we need to make the website do what we need. As far as wishlist items go so far we have: * Calendar with ical import from loco.u.c site (not needed but would still be useful) * WYSIWYG editors to make it easier for users to contribute content for the website. So there are two questions really, does anyone have any substantial objections to cleaning up the user list and only using open id to log into the website? And secondly, is there anything I'm missing that would be useful to set up now? We have 2 weeks of it running in a testing environment to make sure it's working as expected (unfortunately in the testing environment it's only accessible to current website admins or I'd post a link for you all) before it moves into production. This should be plenty of time for people to have a think and bring up any concerns. It's taken a while but it's coming together nicely. -- Regards, Jared Norris JP(Qual) BBehSc(Psych) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JaredNorris -- ubuntu-au mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
