Thanks Timothy, I have taken your advice but for some unclear reason have moved
from the frying pan into the fire.
Ths download of 14.04 went perfectly and was completed in about 30 minutes.
Upgrading followed and I stopped watching. 20 minutes later I came back to find
that the PC had shutdown. Restarting at first produced a blank desktop.
Restarting eventually the desktop was populated with all the folders present on
12.04 but totally without the launching icons and the applets for internet
connection, time and date, etc. This means that I can't connect and open files
not available through the folders on he desktop. I can discern that the
operating system is installed as everything opened through he files in desktop
folders works.
Perhaps the PC shutdown too early, but I can't be sure. I t seems that I must
now install via a disk which I will get from Peter Baker. It's a shame because
the upgrade went somwell in the beginning.
