This makes interesting reading. The error report surfaced about a week ago when I tried to install a mathematical application called Octave which I had previously used with an earlier version of Ubuntu. Later I found the same error when updating.

That all looks very normal right up to the dpkg part. Pity it doesn't tell you the package name it had a problem with. What does dpkg --configure -a give you?

Also, check that you haven't run out of disk space (df), and inodes (df -i) if you're running on ext3/4 filesystems.
