This turned out to be a simple problem of not installing *all* the
feisty-backports hal updates!
It needed all of these, not just 'hal':
$ apt-get install -t feisty-backports hal
$ apt-get install -t feisty-backports hal-device-manager
$ apt-get install -t feisty-backports libhal-storage1
$ apt-get install -t feisty-backports libhal1
** Changed in: feisty-backports (upstream)
