I have successfully backported Ardour 2.7.1 to both hardy and intrepid. The packages can be found in my ppa at https://launchpad.net/~khashayar/+archive. I've also built them locally using prevu. Minimal testing shows they work well on my machine.
For the intrepid backport, no change was required. For hardy, I had to remove the 100_syslibs.patch, since vamp-plugins-sdk is not packaged for hardy. If I'm not mistaken, this is how older ardour packages where compiled on hardy. Also, I had to change one line in SConstruct, in order for the scons to detect soundtouch properly.
