[Impact]
Resolute (26.04, current stable) ships nextcloud-desktop 4.0.6-1, which is far
behind current upstream (upstream now versions the client in line with the
server; stonking has 33.0.7). A desktop sync client ages badly against evolving
Nextcloud servers: users on 26.04 miss sync-correctness fixes and current
server-API support for the whole support window. In practice this pushes users
to third-party sources — the ppa:nextcloud-devs/client PPA or the upstream
AppImage — losing archive provenance and the packaged shell integration.
The Debian/Ubuntu packaging is actively maintained (33.0.7-1 is in Debian
sid/forky and synced to stonking), so a backport brings 26.04 users back onto
archive-built packages.
[Scope]
Source: nextcloud-desktop 33.0.7-1 (universe) from stonking (26.10)
Target: resolute (26.04)
The single source builds all the client binaries including the file-manager
integration plugins: nextcloud-desktop, nextcloud-desktop-cmd,
nextcloud-desktop-common, nextcloud-desktop-l10n, libnextcloudsync0t64,
libnextcloudsync-dev, dolphin-nextcloud, nautilus-nextcloud, nemo-nextcloud,
caja-nextcloud (plus the transitional nextcloud-client* packages). The
integration plugins are part of why a backport is preferable to the AppImage,
which cannot provide them.
[Build-dependency analysis — done 2026-08-20 against the resolute
archive]
All Build-Depends/-Arch/-Indep are satisfiable in resolute at the required
versions (Qt 6.10.2, KF6 6.24, qtkeychain-qt6-dev 0.15.0, ...) with two
exceptions:
1. debhelper-compat (= 14): resolute's debhelper is 13.31ubuntu1, which
provides debhelper-compat up to 13 only.
2. pkg-kde-tools (>= 0.22.0~): resolute has 0.19.1ubuntu2. (Resolute's
pkg-kde-tools does already provide dh-sequence-qmldeps.)
Neither debhelper nor pkg-kde-tools is currently in resolute-backports. So
this is not a no-change rebuild; it needs either
(a) backporting debhelper (>= 14) and pkg-kde-tools (>= 0.22) to
resolute-backports first, or
(b) a small delta to the package: lower debian/control to
debhelper-compat (= 13) and relax the pkg-kde-tools version — this
would need verification that nothing in the packaging depends on
compat-14 or newer qmldeps behavior.
Happy to go whichever way the team prefers.
Evidence the codebase itself builds fine on resolute's toolchain/Qt: the
nextcloud-devs PPA builds the even newer 34.0.2 client on resolute against
the stock Qt 6.10.2/KF6 stack, e.g.

[Reverse dependencies]
The only external reverse dependency in resolute is lomiri-cloudsync-app
(Depends: nextcloud-desktop-cmd). The backported source continues to build
nextcloud-desktop-cmd, and backports are opt-in, so it is unaffected.
Note the library package is renamed libnextcloudsync0 -> libnextcloudsync0t64
(time_t transition) in the new packaging; nothing else in the archive links
against it.
[Testing]
Not yet performed: a test build on resolute is blocked on the
debhelper-compat question above (dependency resolution fails before build).
Once the preferred route from [Build-dependency analysis] is decided, the
requester or any volunteer can run the build and functional testing (sync
against a Nextcloud server, Dolphin integration on Kubuntu) and report
results here.

Dependency and reverse-dependency analysis was done against the current
resolute archive indexes on an up-to-date Kubuntu 26.04 system.
