Sorry in advanced for this big reply :) About 3d Desktops I use Beryl and I love the 3D desktop, I can't even think of my desktop without beryl. The experience is very good. Its highly customizable (and there are a lot of themes on http://gnome-look.org/ ), feels very snappy and It haven't crush on me once on my current setup even after running for 3/4 days on a stretch (I was downloading the last feisty updates, if you are curious, having a 56kb connection is very painful and yes I am crazy). And Expose like feature is just awesome and you can set many other options also like live window previews. Transparency in the terminals are actually transparent.
But Java applications fails to work properly with the 3D Window Manager (Emerald). Eclipse, Net beans works perfectly but other Java application won't resize properly, I had to restart the Window Manager to make them work properly. So you are in for a wild ride if you are a Java developer or intend to use Java based application. Also there is one huge problem, If I switch to terminals(Ctrl+Alt+F# terminals) then the system hangs, So I had to turn off 3d desktop before I switch to those terminals. if someone says it interrupts productivity then I will disagree with him 99% as Managing many window is a snap and live preview is very useful, 1% I agree cause sometime I just love rotating that cube around... and as I love to customize my desk I spend many hours on that too ;) you can use 4 types of shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+PageDown, Ctrl+Alt+PageUp Ctrl+Alt+Left, Ctrl+Alt+Right Alt+Tab WinKey+Tab And the best thing is it runs just perfectly on my 4 year old Geforce2 card without slowing down with most of the animations on, sadly the latest NVIDIA driver (1.97x) do not support my card so I have to manually install the Official Nvidia driver (1.96x). but that is negligible. but I don't recommend for a inexperienced user, you are better off with the legacy driver in the repositories, sadly which is slow. If you have a system like P4/AMD with 256+ Memory and a decent Graphics card you should go for the 3D desktop, It will run on a lower configuration system but I'm not sure How it would perform. ATI graphics card do not have good support for Linux and you won't have a good experience with them, lake of a good driver is the key problem and you are sure to have hard time (probably impossible) setting up 3D desk with an ATI card. Sorry ATI guys And I have no Idea about Intel's builtin card. but I think it works too and probably better then ATI. You want screen shots? You've just got it > http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/53670004/ thats my desktop About Feisty Up to now Feisty is just awesome. Documentation system have a big improvement and I'm actually using this! It lists all the documentation available in the system and they are easily available. Sudoku rocks :D and I hate chess as It always wins... Performance is very very good. Comes up first, goes down first too... GNOME loads first and is much stable. After the final update it haven't crushed on me for once. The default Firefox is very fast unlike Dapper or other older variations. So I'm relieved from downloading and installing the official version :) Auto-compilation in the terminal have improved a LOT! I've found the improvements very useful. If you need a fast editor then I would suggest dumping Gedit(too bloated) and use Vim (Install the full version) its blazing fast and also very difficult to use for a newbie but Its perfect for me after using it for 2/3 months and you'll feel the same after typing <esc> + :w in MS Word or Open Office within a month, hi hi Many GTK Themes are now Customizable! You can change their colors now... Screen savers are still not customizable and I hate that... If you have a surround sound system and you are not getting any then turn off "Analog/Digital Output Jack" from the Volume Control>Switches, it freaked me out for a while. If you want to rip Audio CD as MP3 then don't forget to install lame, Well you can guess I'm very excited and happy about Feisty & Beryl ... :) Don't use automatix or scripts like it, it might mess up your repositories and updating the system might break. Most of the stuffs can now be easily setup in feisty, If you have problems then just go through the Ubuntu forum, that community is very friendly and helpful @raihan hasnain Can you give us some hints about your problem, so we can try to help you? well sorry again for this big reply... :) On 4/25/07, DarkLord (:= <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
