Jan Hendrik Mensen Owner Kowboyz Supply Chain Consulting I used Ubuntu for a while in the past year. I'm sorry to say that Linux offers no advantages -besides lack of license fee- compared to Windows for the average user. Linux' capabilities are generally overstated by a group of people that prefer anything that is not commercial and make them feel special/ alternative as a user...as long as they are not associated with corporate Microsoft.
There are a few diamonds in the open source world (Linux for Servers for one) that are able to meet a broader (but still technically savvy) public's demand. Not until the open source world is able to meet the general dummy's user interface demands this will not improve a whole lot. (I cannot emphasize enough that I am pro open source. However I look at the product's capabilities, not at who the creator behind it is.)
