Besides economical reasons, political repulsion also played a vital part for the decision of CUBA, I guess.
I don't know about the govt. of Bangladesh, but surely I am going to be successful to switch my institute to Linux. Arranging Ubuntu 8.10 party and Fedora 10 party had a good impact raising this issue to the authority. Besides, I wrote a BIG mail to our VC and the head of the Departments advocating for linux. It took about 6 hours to finalize that letter. Now, the authority is switching to linux. Just last week, I found that our VC have sent his EEPC to the IT section to get linux distro installed. Day before yesterday, I have heard from our registrar that they have started using OpenOffice in his office (all admin staffs) and will be switching to Linux. Later, I have heard from the IT section (Hanif vai) that they are preparing to put linux in the registrars office (whole administrative section). Then, it will be spreaded to the Library, teachers wing, and in the LAB. If the universities can switch to Linux, certainly govt. can/have to switch there in near future. Because, the graduates from these universities will be in the job market (already majority of our students are job holders) .... and will be the ambassadors for linux - at least they can spread the news that Linux is a very user-friendly and JHAKKAS thing now. Besides, if the commercial Banks start using linux for security/economical reasons .... how BD govt. can resist! Best wishes. Shamim. Presidency University.
