I thought you wanted to achieve deeper lever expertise with all the available X-AMP systems. Well, if your php5-curl didn't work. You could at least remove all your php then install it back. One easy way to install LAMP in Ubuntu is using the Synaptic and Edit -> Select packages by task or running the tasksel from command prompt Then for php5-curl just install it from repository. Some of the extensions need to be installed from source. If repository dont help then install from source is your best option.
