Firefox 3.5 is totally different from Firefox 3.0. Firefox 3.0 will not auto-update to Firefox 3.5. Firefox 3.0 will only update to Firefox 3.0.1, 3.0.2, etc. Firefox 3.5 will only update to Firefox 3.5.1, 3.5.2, etc. There are two ways to update firefox. When you download the file from www.getfirefox.com, there is an option in Edit->Preferences->Advanced, in the "Update" tab, where Firefox will update itself. This is similiar to Windows.
But if Firefox has been installed from the repos, then it cannot auto-update itself, but can only be updated through the normal Update Manager or Synaptic or apt-get upgrade, etc...
