Did you also use kubuntu/kde and konqueror? I think I know what the 'problem' might be. I have set the option 'open http and https URLs in an application based on the contents of the URL'. I guess kde visits the url (http head?) to determine the mime-type of the response and then opens the url in an application based on the mime-type.
