This is actually already implemented in the Bugtracker code, although it
will still fallback to the old +text interface if it can't access the
launchpad API.

Bug description:
Now that the Launchpad API is becoming more stable and robust the Bugtracker
plugin should attempt to use the launchpadlib python package to retrieve bug
information for the Launchpad tracker.
This would allow bug lookup to be much faster than the current /+text
approach, so even asking for "bug #1" would not time-out easily.
Some notes on this:
I have implemented this on my development bot (nubotu) but this requires
pre-created credentials, as there is no anonymous login for launchpadlib yet
