jah tentou usar o alsamixer para ajustar os volumes do microfone?!?!?! nao sei como o ubuntu/gnome lida com isso, mas o controle mais central do sistema de som costuma ser o alsamixer
abra um terminal e digite alsamixer...eh um programa console mas q funciona muitissimo bem...
