Não teve jeito, a única solução de fato foi abrir um bug-ticket : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/reportbug/+bug/92867
O LILO até funcionou, mas também zooei ele num upgrade ou em outro algum lugar pois agora ao selecionar o boot ele não entra e só dá "Erro 0x01". Enfim, mas deu para perceber que com o LILO iria funcionar.
