Olá pessoal, já resolvi. Removi o Amaya instalado pelo Synaptic (v9.51) e baixei o deb da versão mais nova (v9.55) no site da w3c. De qualquer forma é estranho que uma versão que está nos repositórios do Ubuntu nem rode.
