Tive um problema similar faz tempo. O q eu pesquisei q resolveu na época foi remover o ehci_hcd e deixar o ohci_hcd cuidar do dispositivo externo.
Pesquisando no Google achei o procedimento de novo aqui: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=48126 Basicamente, dê "sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd" (sem as aspas, claro) e depois plugue o bicho (ou ligue).
