O problema foi resolvido. A seguir, o que foi feito, caso alguém tenha o mesmo problema: 1 - Como minha placa Intel 3945ABG é reconhecida pelo sistema como eth1 e não wlan0 ou ath0, editei o /etc/network/interfaces comentando essas linhas e acrescentando o seguinte: auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static (não habilitei o AP como dhcp server ) address ip_da_sua_placa netmask mascara_da_sua_rede gateway ip_do_seu_gatway wireless-essid nome_da_sua_rede_wi-fi wireless-key sua_senha_wep
2 - Como root: #iwconfig eth1 essid nome_da_sua_rede_wi-fi #iwconfig eth1 channel nr_do_canal_habilitado_em_seu_AP #iwconfig eth1 key restricted sua_senha_wep #ifconfig eth1 ip_da_sua_placa netmask mascara_da_sua_rede broadcast endereço_broadcast_da_sua_rede #ifconfig eth1 up E tudo está funcionando.
