Este erro está dizendo que o mplayer não está conseguindo inicialiar o dispositivo de saída. O mesmo ocorre com um mpeg, por exemplo? Se você usar o parâmetro -vo x11 ou -vo sdl ou mesmo -vo gl o que acontece? Você está usando o beryl ou compiz?
