Mauricio se não for usar o Compiz, remova o driver instalado e
use o VESA sem problemas.
Você também pode ver mais neste arquivo:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Veja em especial a seção DEVICE:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE)"
Driver "fglrx"
Busid "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection
E observe em seu final de arquivo algo como:
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection
Veja tb sua man:
$man xorg.conf
Para reconfigurar tudo:
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
