Yes, I like this idea as well. We'd just get an email from launchpad instead of an email to the bugsquad list. Then we just change the documentation to request membership of the group, and make all mentors admins of the group who can accept the person as their mentor by accepting them into the group. Then we'd just need some review process of the pending queue to make sure people haven't been there too long. Perhaps we could review the pending queue at the BugSquad meetings and encourage mentors to join the meetings, where they would accept mentees if able.
