The same on my computer (AMD desktop 1800 MHz, Dapper Drake (6.06)).
Till today everything went fine. This morning I wanted to do the newest
updates but as soon as the updata manager starts my screen goes crazy
(black with some nice colors) and then I get back to the login screen. I
did this twice, it reproduces very nicely. Till now my computer didn't
stop responding...perhaps after the third time.

After that I used the shell and typed:

apt-get update
apt-get -s updgrade (-s because I was a little scared)

The output of the last command was:

Perhaps there is something wrong with one of those packages?

PS: Indeed thank you all for Ubuntu and other great software. Getting
rid of Windows and installing Ubuntu was the best thing I ever did on my
computer... :-)
