The same on my computer (AMD desktop 1800 MHz, Dapper Drake (6.06)). Till today everything went fine. This morning I wanted to do the newest updates but as soon as the updata manager starts my screen goes crazy (black with some nice colors) and then I get back to the login screen. I did this twice, it reproduces very nicely. Till now my computer didn't stop responding...perhaps after the third time.
After that I used the shell and typed: apt-get update apt-get -s updgrade (-s because I was a little scared) The output of the last command was: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done The following packages will be upgraded: kcontrol kdebase-bin kdebase-data kicker konsole libgd2-noxpm libkonq4 7 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. PS: Indeed thank you all for Ubuntu and other great software.
