I believe the convention is not to depend upon the main package from the -data
-package.
I don't know the policy well enough, if it comments on this. However all the
other packages
do this (e.g. xscreensaver and xscreensaver-data, and everything else I have
installed currently).
This makes package management a tad harder. For instance, with aptitude you can
easily
search for installed packages that nothing else depends on, and thus find the
list of
packages you have hand-selected and are not installed as dependencies just for
something
else.
A two-way dependency between gdesklets and gdesklets-data makes searching for
packages
like that just a bit harder.
