I am also experiencing this problem. I just downloaded the newest iso,
and it failed. I also tried a friends distro from a CD he got in a book
for Ubuntu 5 from Apress. So I'm pretty sure its not the disc. I've
seen a few other posts about problems like this, but no solutions.
Please fix this soon, I'm eager to try switching to Ubuntu.

My system:
Asus Motherboard P5AD2-E
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
2 IDE 280 Gb Hard Drives (I'm planning on installing to the 2nd)
1 ASUS DRW-160BP
1 ASUS DVD-E616P3
4gb ram

I think my hardware should be sufficient, its all less than a year old
and uses good namebrands, so I don' think that should be not working.

Thanks
