Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

If a package has a colon in its version, this colon is translated as
1%3a in the name of the package residing in the apt cache, making it a
different name than the one available on repositories.

example (among many):

gawk (Dapper)

name in repository -> gawk_3.1.5-2build1_i386.deb

version reported by dpkg-query -W gawk -> 1:3.1.5-2build1

file in /var/cache/apt/archives -> gawk_1%3a3.1.5-2build1_i386.deb

** Affects: apt (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed
