OK. It can be closed.

By restoring backups, I was able to replicate the scenario which led me
to believe that autodetection was working. A second PC using Breezy with
HPLIP 0.9.11 had been configured with the HP URIs for the Officejet, and
published both the fax and the printer via cups. The laptop (also Breezy
with HPLIP 0.9.11) autodetected them on this PC.

Both PCs were later upgraded to Dapper. The HPLIP included with Dapper
is 0.9.7, which does not support the fax function. Now that I have
upgraded to HPLIP 1.6.6, both print and fax are available. However at
least one PC must connect to the Officejet using the URIs in order for
the other PC to autodetect via cups. With a fixed IP on the Officejet, I
can connect all PCs using the URIs.

Thanks & Best Regards,
John.
